Modest Mouse - Float On
OK, sometimes it's easy to get annoyed with the Americans. They start wars, they dominate in most areas of industry, selling their 'American ideals' around the world, and they dominate our entertainment industry, giving few chances to homegrown acts to succeed, the way hip hop has taken over the charts and airwaves over here. But then there are occassions when you just have to forgive them. There has been some fantastic albums from bands in the States, that bands over here simply would not be able to produce, The Shin's Chutes Too Narrow being one very fine example. And to join them, it seems, will be the latest album from Modest Mouse. They've been around for ever, but the new single Float On marks the era when they will reach a new audience. And they should. The song's stomps along until every one who listens will be bopping along. Often one listen won't be enough, and as soon as it's over you'll be reaching for that repeat button, again and again.

Mo-ho-bish-o-pi - Drop Jaw

A bit slow to begin with, but once Drop Jaw kicks into the chorus, it runs along on its glitter boots, like it was back in the glam era. The song is just long enough, at under 3 minutes. If it had been any longer, the song would have got a little annoying, but Mo-ho-bish-o-pi have learnt the lesson that if you don't have very many interesting things to say, just make your point, and move along.

Mo*ho*bish*o*pi - Hear the Air

Possibly one of the best Mo*ho*bish*o*pi songs. Again it's one of those little glam, punk stompers, that speeds along. The song is over almost as soon as it has begun. And any song that name checks Pavement can only be a good thing.

Murry the Hump - Thrown Like a Stone (Shifty Disco)
Listening to Thrown Like A Stone is like taking a walk on the lazy sunday afternoon. It's so laid back that you have to wonder if the singer, Matt, was lying down asleep while he was recording the song! However if you need a song to calm you down after a hard day/ week at work this would be it. In Don't Slip Up they do the very Welsh thing of namechecking something from Welsh culture (in this case it's S4C). Even though it isn't as good as the title track the song carries across a Murry the Hump sound. It'll be interesting to see if this sound is developed in any future releases.
