These are the bands we have been enjoying for the past year, and now it's the time for them to spread the word and introduce it to the world. It's a pretty handy starter guide for people who haven't heard what the excitment in the music scene is all about.
It's quite apt that the cd opens with a track inspired by a recording of Jason from ...Trail of Dead. The Body Is Still There But the Mind is Gone was said at some point in the evening on the night when The Rock of Travolta supported ...TOD back in 2000. Probably one of the most dramatic TROT tracks (well they're all pretty dramatic) it's good to hear it in its original arrangement, with Joe's violin accompanying the madness of the basses and guitar. If ever there was an air drumming track, it would be this one, with all its twists and turns.
South Sea Company Prospectus keep on with the sampling theme, but with a bit more of a space rock approach. However there is still that key interaction between the bass and guitar that seems so key in bands today.
This is Dustball's return to record since their 'reformation', and The Croc is the instrumental track they now end their set on, just to keep with the theme for the whole EP. On record it sounds a bit more restrained and clean cut than live, but then in the gigging situation they can pull about with the tune a lot more. But comparing this back to their releases in 1997-98 shows how much more mature they sound since their break.
Football de Salao is a more laidback ending, just to wind down after the build up during the previous 3 tracks. Like Dustball, Six Ray Sun have given up their vocals to fit in with the mood on the CD, however they have managed it with more sucess than Dustball, sounding like the calmer older brother, to the 3 excitable young pups before them.
These aren't the best tracks of each band, however they do work well together on one EP, while sounding similar you can work out the different styles of the bands. As an introduction it's a good start, but then to find out more you have to go and see the bands themselves.
