Fiel Garvie - Leave Me Out of This

This is the music to listen to as you drift in and out of conciousness, coming down after a night out. For the first half of the album, the band doesn't let up on their gently drifting melodies. It helps that the songs have eerie vocals, creating a whole Cocteau Twins feel to the album. This eerie feel created by hoarse, whispered vocals, and orchestration, feels a bit sinister at times, working against the comforting melodies. It's the aural equivalent of the witch offering Snow White her apple.

In the hands of some other bands, this 'eerie' approach would mean that the whole album would sound exactly the same, and rather flat. But just like how the artwork has shining stars on it, there is enough to keep the album shimering through. The fine balance between the drama and the pleasant keeps the album interesting, you never know when the tone may change such as talking a hole in my head, an upbeat track, that almost comes as a shock after all the calm ones. After the calmness of the first 6 tracks, this opening into rockier territory is hard to adjust to, but luckily, the final track flake returns to the gentle lullabies of the rest of the album.
