Once in a while a band comes along that are completely different from all the other bands around. Usually they would be bands creating all manners of noise and experimental music. This is why Athlete are so refreshing. They aren't punk or rock or electronica, but they still have the best songs.
When Westside was originally released around a year ago, it was hard to think how it would fit in with anything else. This album is the answer, full of quirky little songs that don't really fit in anywhere else, but go together coherently.
Athlete really have to be admired by the way the band have blossomed. It would be very easy just to start off sounding like any other band, and therefore have an immediate audience. By sounding unlike anything else, they have managed to create a very ambitious debut album. And the hope that there are still many creative bands out there.
