Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Botnophobia @ Zodiac 22/09/03

Is this a joke? The man onstage is dressed in stockings and a dress, and singing 'Rohypnol, Rohypnol', the drummer's wearing a toy helmet, and the guitarist has a garland on his head, and a stuffed toy in front of his shorts. Never was it thought possible, but here are a band even stranger than British Sea Power. However, unlike BSP, Botnophobia just didn't have the songs to carry the act off. Most of the audience spent the set wondering if they had missed an obvious joke, or did we just not take enough drugs.

Anyway normality almost resumed with Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. As inspriation to any mid level indie band, here are a band who have never had significance success, but have just released their 9th album. However Gorkys are unique, in their way of developing songs from a folk influence to strange, but beautiful works. It's refreshing to see a band who are so comfortable with their sound that they haven't changed much over the years, but then why change when the sound they're making is so perfect?
