Ladytron @ Brookes Student Union, 18/03/03

In the days of style over music, Ladytron have the balance absolutely right. On the face of it they are Kraftwerk dressed up as Abba, 2 boys, 2 girls playing music with sythesizers. Yes, the electronic sound does seem to go back to those German pioneers, but are as far from Abba as can be. While Reuben and Danny stand still behind their keyboards, it is Mira and Helen who are the focus of the show.

From the way the songs sound recorded, you would expect a pretty robotic, if not motionless performance on stage. This was half true, but as the set went on the girls looked more and more comfortable venturing out from behind their keyboards, and brought some human touch to their music. In fact what they managed to do with the songs was a revelation. I thought performance of electronic music would simply involve pushing the buttons at the right time, but the way they managed to mess around with their songs, especially He Took Her to a Movie, ending in a noisy climax, brought to attention a new angle to electronic music.
