Clearlake, The Delays and Six Ray Sun @ the Zodiac 07/05/03

So after a break of nearly a year due to accidents and other things, Six Ray Sun are back. The band who refuse to be called an Oxford band (well they're not really), and who've never wanted to settle into any type of sound. They'd rather just do where their instruments lead them. This break has meant that they could re-orientate themselves to a new(ish) sound. Some of the songs are slightly more discoy (even one sounded a bit like Atomic by Blondie), but then the other songs are much rockier.

The Delays seem to be a product of the record company's imagination. Certainly with the way they looked, they looked like they had just stepped out of the hairdressers'. Luckily they've verred towards the musical side of things instead of just bashing things as loudly as they could. There's a bit of the 60s about the way they sound, sort of like the Byrds, but with high soaring vocals.

It's the beginning of their tour with Clearlake. Unfortunately Clearlake suffered from a difficult beginning, with technical problems, but the brilliance of their songs helped to get over the problems. On a first listen, their second album seems to be heading in a different direction from their first, however they showed tonight, but jumbling up the songs from the two albums, that they work off each other. However, due to the bad start, the band were unsettled throughout the whole set, Jason Pegg, their singer even commented, after everything was going well again, that 'for their gigs they should never be any good'. Well they were very wrong then, since the live performance of their fantastic songs just confirmed what a gem they are.
