Tom Vek and Clor @ The Zodiac, 03/05/05

Clor have appeared from the 80s bypassing the 90s and straight to today. Their music is a mixture of the electronic music of the 80s that seemed so futuristic at the time, inspired by music such as the theme to Tomorrow's World, and accompanying many early computer games. Recent single Love and Pain is very representative of this sound, particularly in the instrumental in the end. The band takes some very simple guitar lines and uses the two guitars to work them against each other producing an interesting angular sound. When they get it right, there are some great pop melodies as well, to hold the fighting guitar lines together. However, they also have a go at the other end of 70s music. Prog. Here it doesn't work so well, for example in Tough Love. Without the electronic sound pushing them forward, these tracks drag a bit. However as a set, the entire sound works together very well, and sounds like a band keen to try different ways of writing songs.

Tom Vek on the other hand, has found his formula, and he's going to stick to it. His formula base his songs around a funky bassline over which he sings. A couple of times this works, in his singles If You Want, and in particular, I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes, where by speeding up the bass a little, and a melody that arcs over the bassline, it is almost an indie club anthem. However for the rest of the set, it just plods along. This music sounds like the product of someone who has listened to far too much 60s psychedelia, but not enough confidence to try out the different tricks that makes the originals much more interesting to listen to. Well he is still only young, so maybe the variety is still yet to come.
